How To clear the cache on iPhone and iPad to free up storage space

Although the storage capacity of iOS devices has been improving over time, in many cases it can still fall short, and therefore having resources to free up space can be important. One of these resources can be clearing the cache on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, a process that is not at all intuitive, but with which it is possible to recover up to several GB of storage space on devices with the aforementioned operating system.

The steps to follow are not completely simple, since Apple does not offer any specific option that deletes all the cache or temporary files in iOS, but it is possible to do it, at least in part, and in the following lines I would like to explain how. you can get it.

What is the cache?

But before getting into the subject, I think it is important to make a brief introduction about what the cache is and the reasons why we can do without it, despite the fact that it can be useful on some occasions.

Basically, the cache is a series of data that some apps and iOS itself save in the storage system so that they can be accessed more quickly later. For example, in the case of Safari and other browsers, it may be certain files from the websites you visit so that you do not have to download them again when you access them again.

The problem is that these files are stored in the storage system without any limits and can become obsolete or that you never directly need to access them again (for example, the files of web pages that you only visit once and never come back).

In the case of websites that you visit regularly or in cases such as messaging apps, they can be useful to improve the loading speed of the website itself or of conversations. But as you can imagine, this is not always necessary, instead, they are always stored, and depending on the use of your devices, they can occupy up to several GB of total space with files that are really garbage, they are useless.

At this point, you will surely want to know how to delete cache files on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch and start recovering storage space for other more useful things like storing photos, installing new apps, etc, etc…

As I said before, Apple does not offer any option within its menus that allows you to delete all the cache stored on the devices at once, so we must go to different points to achieve it, these are:

Clear the cache of Safari and other browsers

Surely Safari, or the web browser you use, will be one of the apps that has the largest amount of junk files stored. For this reason, it is usually a good option to start here when performing a cache cleaning.

To clear the Safari cache you must do the following:

1 Tap on Settings

2 Tap on Safari Browser.
3 Scroll all the way down and click on Advance.

Now select the Website data menu and wait for the device to load the information. In it, you will see the amount of space occupied by each of the websites from which information is saved.
Finally, tap on Delete all data and confirm the deletion on the Delete now button that will appear in the drop-down menu.

In this way, you will only delete the cache files stored on the device, but you will not lose your browsing history and Safari will continue to autocomplete the addresses of the websites that you access most often.

There is a slightly faster way to do it and with fewer steps, but in addition to deleting temporary files, it also deletes history. If you don’t mind, you can do it from Settings – Safari – Clear history and website data.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is the second most used web browser on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. If this is your case and you need to delete temporary files to recover storage space, you must follow these steps:

Open the Google Chrome app and access Settings from the icon with the three dots in the lower right corner.

Tap on the Privacy option and once inside select Clear browsing data.
In the Time section, select Since always and press back in the upper left corner of the screen.
Now select the data you want to delete. Normally selecting Cached files and images is enough, but if you want you can also select Cookies and site data, browsing history, etc, etc…
Once you have selected all the options you want, tap on Clear browsing data and confirm again by tapping on the Clear browsing data button in the drop-down menu to complete the operation
